Paws & Whiskers is a charming solo piano piece that turns the unpredictable world of cats into a lively musical narrative. Inspired by Kalina Armenliiska’s own kitten, the composition moves between tender calm, playful energy and moments of sudden curiosity, reflecting the quicksilver nature of feline behavior.
Opening in A-flat major, the piece pairs flowing melodic lines with unexpected harmonic changes, including a brief shift toward D minor. These contrasts give the music a sense of movement and surprise, while preserving an overall warmth and lightness. Rather than simply illustrating cats, Armenliiska translates familiar feline habits into changing musical moods, from quiet companionship to mischievous bursts of activity.
The recording was made at home using a digital piano and audio software, with only modest processing through limiting and normalization. That straightforward approach complements the personal character of the project. As an amateur composer, Armenliiska creates music primarily for self-expression and continues developing her craft, currently learning Cubase to improve future recordings.
Paws & Whiskers ultimately succeeds as an affectionate musical portrait, celebrating the humor, tenderness and unpredictability cats can bring into everyday life.
