Norwegian composer Solveig Sørbø ventures into unsettling emotional territory with Heroin Chic, a 90-minute contemporary opera that challenges conventional ideas of music theatre. Inspired by Maria Kjos Fonn’s novel, the work examines addiction, sexuality, fractured identity and the elusive boundary separating life from death.
Across two acts, protagonist Elise spirals through obsession, destructive relationships and a desperate search for transcendence. Sørbø translates this psychological turmoil into a vivid, theatrical soundscape where avant-garde experimentation meets contemporary classical writing and traces of popular culture. Hypnotic melodies intertwine with forceful percussion and unusual instrumental colours, including a distinctive use of the cimbalom. The result is demanding yet compelling, balancing musical intricacy with raw emotional intensity.

Featuring Ensemble Oslo, conductor Hans Petter Mæhle and a talented lineup of soloists, the recording captures the immediacy of a live performance, preserving the production’s expansive atmosphere and dramatic tension. Its international arrival follows warmly received presentations in Romania and Norway, where audiences encountered Sørbø’s uncompromising vision firsthand.
Released through Solsnu and distributed by Diger, Heroin Chic is available digitally, on double CD and on double vinyl. For listeners drawn to experimental opera and boundary-pushing contemporary composition, this ambitious release offers a provocative, immersive experience that lingers well beyond its final, deliberately ambiguous moments.
