Magic Show finds Michael B Kowal turning everyday experiences into a warm, rootsy collection that feels both lived-in and carefully shaped. Built from guitar, vocals, and instinctive songwriting, the EP moves comfortably between folk, blues, country, bluegrass, reggae, and Louisiana-inflected sounds without settling into a single category.
Much of its character comes from Kowal’s preference for preserving natural imperfections. Rather than smoothing away every rough edge, he allows timing, dynamics, atmosphere, and spontaneous details to remain part of the recordings. That approach gives the songs an intimate quality, as though the listener has stepped into the room while they are being played.
The recording process is equally central to the project’s identity. Created largely in Kowal’s Louisiana home setup, the material began with direct performances before modern production techniques were used to expand arrangements, textures, mixing, and mastering.
